Don’t Get Scammed: How to Protect Yourself When Using Bitcoin ATMs

At Athena, we take your safety seriously. While Bitcoin is an incredible innovation, it’s also become a tool that scammers try to exploit—especially targeting unsuspecting individuals through manipulation and fear tactics. We’re here to help you stay informed and safe.
How Scammers Operate
Impersonators claiming to be with the U.S. Marshals, Police, IRS, or Border Patrol; fake emails or phone calls posing as companies like PayPal, Amazon, Microsoft, or banks; scammers telling victims they must deposit cash at a Bitcoin ATM to avoid legal trouble or to “secure” their finances; and requests to send money via Bitcoin to pay for bail, debt, or protect your identity. These are frauds, and once a Bitcoin transaction is completed, it cannot be reversed. That’s why it’s crucial to recognize the signs before it’s too late.

Common Scam Tactics
Pressure to Act Quickly
Scammers want you to panic so you don’t think clearly.
Demands for Secrecy
You're told not to tell your bank, your family, or the police.
Untraceable Payments
You're instructed to pay using Bitcoin, gift cards, or wire transfers.
Too Good to be True
Promises of guaranteed returns, easy money, or "refunds" from big companies.
How You Can Protect Yourself
- Never send Bitcoin to someone you don’t know.
- Don’t trust caller ID—it can be spoofed.
DID YOU KNOW???
Athena Bitcoin will never call, email, or text you asking for Bitcoin payments.
If someone is telling you to go to a Bitcoin ATM to make a payment for any kind of bill, fine, or government fee—it’s a scam. Report suspicious behavior to your local authorities and share any reports or documents with us if you’ve already submitted a transaction.
